how to organize a college dorm room

Organizing a small dorm room at college can be challenging.

Here are some of my favorite products to help you make the most of your space and keep your dorm room organized.

Create more vertical space - raise the bed

The best way to create more space in your dorm room is to raise the bed. These bed risers are great because not only are they adjustable to your needs, they bring the power and USB outlets out away from the wall for easy access. Many colleges have already raised the beds and do not allow bed risers, so you’ll need to check before installing your own bed risers.

Under Bed Storage

Now that you’ve raised your bed, you can take advantage of that extra space with some of these great under bed storage ideas.

If you are looking to store bulky items like sweaters and winter coats, I recommend these totes.

If you would prefer to add more drawer space to your room, this rolling 3-drawer cart is perfect.

Here is a great shoe organizer for under the bed. Here is another great shoe organizer for under the bed (or in the closet).

If you don’t raise your bed, you can still take advantage of this great under bed storage solution.

Other organizing solutions for your dorm room

Furniture that serves two purposes is always a win. If there is room for a nightstand, this is a great place to add storage and functionality. Ottomans can have several purposes as well - extra storage, extra seating, and maybe a step up to a raised bed. I’m also including some options for when there is just not enough space for a nightstand next to the bed. Click on each image for the shopping link.

Friends stopping by? Or sick of sitting in your desk chair when playing video games? How about a comfy chair that folds up and tucks away when not in use?

Bathroom totes…not the most exciting purchase, but necessary. I like this plastic one that’s easy to keep clean and will handle the moisture of those shared bathrooms.

Last but not least, don’t forget those command hooks to hang up various items around the room including those wet towels.

Things to Help You Be a Better Roommate

There’s a good chance that two freshman roommates are going to have different sleep and study habits. Here are a few things to help you be a considerate roommate.

Moving Day!

Suitcases are okay if you are able to send them back home with Mom and Dad, but these collapsible bags are an even better solution for moving all of your stuff and can be used for toting your dirty clothes to the laundry room too!

Final Organizing Tips

Unless you have all of the measurements of your dorm room, you may want to bring a few options for each space so you can try out a few different solutions to make sure you are maximizing the space. Then send items that don’t work home with your parents for them to return. (Thanks Mom and Dad!)

Lastly, to keep that small space looking organized and tidy, I recommend spending just five minutes tidying each night before you go to sleep. Then make your bed each morning before you head out for the day. In a small dorm room, making your bed makes a huge difference in making the room look neat!

Have a great year at school!
