Closet Organization Tips

Spring is here! With the change in weather, many of you may be putting away your winter clothes or just moving things around in your closet to better access those lighter weight options. This is a great time to edit your wardrobe. Here are some tips to help you along the way.

Decluttering Tips

Ask yourself these questions when reviewing your wardrobe. Have I worn this in the last year? Is it ripped or stained? Does it fit well? Does it look good on me?

Using color analysis to understand what colors look best on you is also a great tool to use during this process. Sarah Stango from House of Colour is a great local Northern NJ resource.

Turn your hangers backwards during this seasonal review of clothes and only turn them around once you’ve worn an item. This will help you remember what you’ve worn during the season.

Organizing Tips

Once you’ve decluttered your clothes, it’s time to organize what is left. Here are some tips and favorite products to help you maximize your space.

Hang strategically: Sort your hanging clothes by type - short sleeve shirts, long sleeve, cardigans, etc. Some people also like to color code these sections, but you do you. I also recommend matching velvet hangers. Not only do they look fabulous, but they actually take up less room and help you maximize your space. Bring any old wire hangers back to the dry cleaner to be reused. To add more hanging space to your closet, adding a second hanging closet rod is a great idea. These are also great to use in your kiddos’ rooms when they can’t reach the standard rod.

Make the most of drawer space: If you have drawers in your closet try file folding your clothes (storing them vertically) and use drawer dividers to keep everything in place.

Keep folded clothes tidy: If you have shelving in your closet to store folded clothes or bags, use these acrylic shelf dividers to keep piles separate and neat. These dividers are also great to keep handbags tidy.

Use the vertical space: If you have high shelves that are hard to reach, using bins that you can pull down and access allows you to take full advantage of that hard to reach space. Measure your space before ordering, but here are some bins that I’ve typically used for this purpose.

Where Can I Take Donations? Where Can I Sell or Recycle Items?

Here is a link to find a spot in central, Northern NJ to donate your discarded clothes. I’ll be continually updating this page and adding filters by type of item, so bookmark it for future reference. If you know of an organization in need of donations, please reach out. If you aren’t local to me, the page might give you ideas for organizations to check out close
